    Wishing Tunnel

A modern-day campfire story warning against the dangers of assuming all family legends are just that: legends.

    1Listen from 0:06

It all started at my sister’s house. My sister lives right on the edge of town next to the woods; you walk out of her back yard into the woods. Whenever I used to go play there with my nephews, we would go adventuring in the woods. One time we found this hole in the mountain and it basically punches through the whole mountain. I don’t know if it was a mining shaft or they were going to build a tunnel there but we made this tradition that on their sixth birthdays we would go out to this tunnel and we would make a wish.

    2Listen from 0:46

So now it’s my youngest nephew’s sixth birthday and we’re at the party and everyone is having a good time, so we say “Now it’s time.” My older nephew is not so interested so it’s just me and my younger nephew walking through the woods, throwing pine cones. We get all the way to let’s call it the Wishing Tunnel, this hole in the mountain, and we go inside this hole. We get halfway through, you gotta take flashlights because halfway through it just gets really, really dark and this is when you make the wishes.

    3Listen from 1:19

So I tell him, “Okay now is the time, turn off your lights.”

And it’s dark, it’s so dark you can’t see your hand in front of your face. I think he’s there – I hope he’s there – but I can’t see anything because it’s so dark.

I say to him, “Now is the time you gotta shout your wish at the top of your lungs.”

It’s pitch dark and so he screams out, “I want a million dollars!”

So I say, “No you gotta wish, you can’t want. You gotta make a wish.”

“Oh okay. I wish I had a million dollars!” I mean he really shouted this out, there was a lot of enthusiasm in that wish.

And we turn our lights back on and I say, “Okay well now we gotta go through to the other side and your wish should be there.”

    4Listen from 2:08

Now I know it’s not true because we’ve done this a few times and there’s nothing on the other side. But still it’s a family tradition – it’s what we do – and he seems to be enjoying it, he’s got a big ol’ smile on his face. So we turn our lights back on and we make it through to the other side, and of course nothing’s there. Nothing’s there.

He’s still having a good time and we turn around and I say, “Sorry man, maybe next time.”

We get about halfway through and he pulls on my hand and says, “Now it’s your turn.”

    5Listen from 2:37

I say, “Ah you know I’ve already done this,” and he says, “No come on, I did it, you do it. It’s your turn.”

I thought well okay he was awesome, he’s been a great sport, he’s not disappointed about his million dollars.

So I go, “Okay turn off your lights.”

We turn off the lights and it’s dark again. And I think, and I just say the first thing that comes to my head, “I wish I was a werewolf!”

Then I turn the lights back on and he’s just got the biggest smile on his face, he really liked that one, he just loves that scary stuff. Now he’s super excited so he takes off and I just kinda slowly make my way back to the edge of the tunnel.

    6Listen from 3:16

He’s ahead of me, he’s quite a bit ahead of me but he’s stopped. He’s in the middle of the path, kneeling down, crouched down looking at something. I didn’t know what it was, it was weird. The closer I get I see it’s a bag, and then my mind is like: “That’s weird, that wasn’t there when we went in.”

    7Listen from 3:38

I get closer and closer and then I see it’s a bag full of money. Lots and lots of money.
