About

We Made This Up

We love to make up stories.

We love to make up stories and tell them to you. We love to imagine all kinds of stories – from tall tales to pseudo-non-fiction with all the randomness inbetween. We love to share with you the journey we took in making up those stories.

Handmade Imagination Inspiration Explosion Technique

Within a strict timeframe, we use a special technique to force inspiration to explode from our imaginations, and then we punch it in the face! All for you on our quest to tell you the most interesting stories we can think up – hence the name, we made this up.

Don’t expect any two stories of ours to be the same (except for the ones that are). They are all hand-made, with tons of love and told to you as best as life and time allows.

We are theRenegadesof .CO.ZA.

We’re two creative guys: JollyRogerOX (#spoiler-alert, his real name is Roger) and V (for Vaughan). By Renegades we hint at the fact we see ourselves as rebellious in our creativity. We try to reject the obvious and make up our own rules, while having bucket loads of fun. As for the .Co .Za part, well that’s because we’re from South Africa (which explains the pseudo-British/Australian/New Zealand accents you hear when listening to our stories).

Why should you care?

Because you’re creative

Maybe you’re like us – you have a fire of creativity burning inside of you. Maybe you’re trying to to release that fire onto the world for all to see the light and feel the warmth. Maybe you, like us, find that task is easier said than done. If that’s the case, join us for the story behind the story. We are regular guys, with day jobs and responsibilities and all the first-world problems that come with that but we’re still being creative.

We believe that being creative is part of a well-balanced and healthy life. Plus it’s fun as all hell. Sometimes we know exactly what we’re doing, but other times we make it up as we go along (hence the name, we made this up). On this site we tell you all about the highs and lows we had in making up our stories. Hopefully it encourages you to keep pursuing your creative passions. Think of it like oxygen for your own fire.

Rules ofthe game

Some times we make up stuff just for fun, or because V had a dream, or inspiration struck JollyRogerOX. Mostly though we make up stories by following a process that challenges each of us to come up with something new at regular times.

We don’t always stick to the process 100% (we are renegades afer all) but it goes something like this:

Week #1

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

Image as the source

V chooses three images from royalty-free sources, such as a photo website. JollyRogerOX then chooses the image that appeals to him the most from the three on offer.

Imagination ON!

Now that we have an image, we talk about what feelings or inspirations it invokes. We then part ways to each formulate our ideas, do research, think up twists – basically brainstorm a story for the first week.

Week #2

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

Do what you can, but DO IT!

Life happens! So at the start of the second week we’re unlikely to have written our stories yet but the deadline is this week. So we do what we can and hope to have something ready on time! The trick is to write a little bit each day. With our stories written, we email them to the other.

The fun bit: Show and Tell!

After we submit the stories, we each take a day to mull over the output and then give feedback to each other. Acting as creator, audience, and critic for the different story, we share our experiences and the consequences of the choices we made along the way.

Week #3

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

Story as the source

V now uses JollyRogerOX’s story as the source for his story; similarly, Roger takes V’s story as the basis for his new story. The rules are open – we can create a prequel, sequel, re-write, or even focus on an interesting minor character featured in the original story – just as long as there is some connection to the original story.

Week #4

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday
  • Sunday

Keep it up – you can do it!

Again the rules of the game demand a piece of work to be done. So we use the pressures of life and moods we’re experiencing to further the richness of the story each of us is making, but we have to deliver something!

Homework is no joke…

Along with submitting this week’s story, we aim to work in any edits or changes to our original Week #2 stories. That way we’re always either in editing mode or story mode during the weeks that we take on the challenge.

After all’s said and done, it’s been four weeks and we’ve got four stories ready to enter the audio recording process. So it’s time to start the whole process over again, but this time JollyRogerOX chooses the three images and V picks the main image from that.
