    A Kiss of Magic

Fairy tales taught you and I the blessings and curses of magic, but have you ever wondered about the finer details?

    1Listen from 0:06

Well, I sensed I was deep, deep underground and it was very dark and quiet…no, that’s not it. More as if the darkness was alive, like a creature that ate light and sound. Maybe I was in a big cave, a huge cave, as big as a great hall. And it was filled with water all the way up to the ceiling, leaving only the tiniest gap for my face to peak above the water’s edge. I remember breathing comfortably but with every breath I inhaled, I could taste the breath I had just exhaled.

    2Listen from 0:54

I recall the feeling of wanting to panic but the water seemed to almost absorb my feelings. I was scared of growing tired and drowning, or running out of air. I devised plans of escape – like swimming to the edge of this supposed cave – but the water was like a voice telling me it was of no use. And I agreed. I knew, almost as if it was a memory I had always known, that the prison’s edge would move with me and leave me trapped in the middle, floating in a seemingly bottomless expanse of dark water.

    3Listen from 1:35

I wanted to scream but I had no voice; I wanted to thrust about but could not feel my arms. Just the water tickling my face, and the taste of my own breath. I could not tell you how long I floated there like that; it felt like forever, or maybe it was just a minute. All I know for certain is I was hollow: I had no heart, no body, and barely a mind. Just… awake, and nothing else.

    4Listen from 2:14

Then something amazing happened. A surge of energy possessed me! Lightning filled my veins, my skin burned; my chest ballooned with air and I began screaming. Only it didn’t hurt, it felt good – very good in fact. I could feel all my pain and emptiness begin to exit through my voice. The noise was horrific but I did not care – how could I? I became overwhelmed with joy, with beautiful memories, moments of undiluted bliss.

    5Listen from 2:47

Tears of love and warmth streamed down my face. Every part of my body became like a sponge being squeezed, pushing out the sadness and broken promises, the heartache and the dead weight of regret and all the while soaking up every drop of happiness I’ve ever known.

    6Listen from 3:10

The presence of darkness was no longer felt, nor that endless cave’s walls or the water-filled abyss. Instead, there were fireworks – magnificent bursts of violet and yellow and blue – and soon my entire view went white with the explosions of light. I could twist, I could turn, breath and scream. I was free. And just when I could not imagine anything better, I heard your father’s voice:
    “Snow… wake up…”
